Tenderheaded: Joy at the Root Brooch
Created in connection with the Tenderheaded: Joy at the Root workshop featured during the Parted Hair exhibition, this brooch honors the salon as a sanctuary, a space shaped by Black women where care, trust, and tenderness are practiced daily.
The piece features a crowned Black silhouette, laser-cut in wood and layered with acrylic, and is adorned with pearl drops and an afro pick. Each element reflects ritual, cultural pride, and the quiet intimacy of being cared for by someone who knows you.
More than an accessory, this brooch is a wearable acknowledgment of Black women’s love, labor, and stewardship of beauty.
Wear it as a reminder.
Wear it as an honoring.
Wear it as joy at the root.
